Wilmore Residence Expansion
Located in Charlotte’s historic Wilmore neighborhood, this single-family residence was transformed from a modest single-story home with a small attic into a spacious and modern family dwelling that respects the character of the district.
The project included a significant expansion of the home’s footprint to create a new first-floor master suite, while also adding a second story with two full bedrooms and a shared bathroom. To achieve the necessary height for the upper level, the design introduced shed dormers, seamlessly integrating the addition with the home’s historic architectural style.
Inside, the first floor was extensively reconfigured to provide a more open and connected layout, anchored by a new central stair that serves as both a functional and visual focal point. The design also emphasized indoor–outdoor living by incorporating a screened-in porch directly off the kitchen, creating a flexible space for entertaining and everyday family use.
The renovation balances the client’s desire for modern comfort and expanded living space with a sensitivity to the historic context of the Wilmore district, resulting in a home that feels both timeless and tailored to contemporary family life.
